Restless Sleep? Loneliness May be to Blame
People who feel lonely tend to experience more nighttime restlessness and disruptions than their better-adjusted peers, according to a study led by Lianne Kurina, PhD, an assistant professor of epidemiology at the University of Chicago.

Josh Garoon Joins DHS
Health Studies welcomes Josh Garoon, who joins us the department as an Instructor. Josh comes to Chicago from the Department of Health, Behavior and Society at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. His work will focus on health and development policy both in the US and globally.

Fabrice Smieliauskas Joins DHS Faculty
We welcome Fabrice Smieliauskas, who joins the department as Assistant Professor (Health Services Research). Fabrice comes to Chicago from the Department of Economics program in Health Policy at Harvard. His work focuses on the extent to which financial relationships between physicians and industry lead to actual, as opposed to potential, conflicts of interest; the goals that industry seeks to advance by fostering such relationships; and the effects on quality of care received by patients.

Promotions
The Department congratulates Tamara Konetzka, who is now Associate Professor (Health Services Research), and Masha Kocherginsky, who is now Research Associate (Associate Professor) in the Biostatistics Laboratory. Both promotions became effective July 1.

Congratulations to PhD Students
Stephanie Melkonian is interested in epidemiology with an emphasis on cancer genetics. She proposed a study to examine the effects of gene-gene and gene-environment interactions on early-onset breast cancer porgnosis.
Jing Guo has chosen to study long-term care; specifically to measure preferences for home and community-based services (HCBS) compared with institutional and to estimate HCBS on the probability and costs of future institutionalizaton. Her work could have important policy implications.

New Finding on Cardiovascular Mortality Risk Factors
Recently, the British Medical Journal published the work of Dr. Habib Ahsan and colleagues, who have been evaluating the association between arsenic exposure and mortality from cardiovascular disease and whether or not smoking influences this association. Ted Karrison Elected SCT Fellow
Biostat Lab Director Ted Karrison has been elected a Fellow of the Society for Clinical Trials, an international professional organization comprised of trialists from a variety of environments who are dedicated to developing and sharing knowledge surrounding methods used to conduct clinical trials.
He received this award at the Society's annual meeting in Vancouver, Canada.

Habib Ahsan and Robert Gibbons Named Pritzker Scholars
Habib and Robert have both been named 2010 - 2011 Pritzker Scholars. This is a great recognition of their bodies of scholarly work.
