In this lecture, I will frame violence as a disease that needs a public health approach to mitigate the impact of violence in our communities. I will discuss the current limitations of a purely biomedical model for trauma care in this country. In May, 2018,
the University of Chicago Medicine Trauma Center will launch their adult trauma center, the first adult trauma center on the South Side of Chicago in over a quarter of a century. I will summarize the opportunities that we have to develop an approach and programming
to make impact on the lives of individuals and health of communities.
