Fabrice Smieliauskas is a health economist whose research interests center on markets for a range of medical technologies, including medical devices, biopharmaceuticals, diagnostics, and health information technology. Topics of particular interest include:
- Financial conflicts of interest in medicine and how they affect physician practice patterns and biomedical research and their broader role in medical technology markets
- Evaluation of the consequences (intended and otherwise) of regulation that seeks to manage these conflicts
- Market and sociological forces that drive the diffusion of technology
- Incremental innovation in medicine, including both small tweaks that innovators make to existing drugs and medical devices and the expansion of health care technologies to new clinical indications
